Recall
The best way to start an excellent recall is to catch your dog naturally doing it. When you are home, and your dog is walking to you, say “here” and reward with praise. Do this anytime your dog walks to you naturally. Eventually, call your dog from the other room with an enthusiastic “Here” and when your dog comes to you.. reward and praise!
Have a good indoor recall before practicing outside in a fenced-in area or on a long line. The additional distractions outside make recall a little harder outside for your pup.
Reward
Reward.
Always reward when your pup decides to make a good choice. If you do not, you are not providing a positive reinforcement, and therefore there is no consequence for the good choice.
By offering a reward anytime you see a good choice, you set the foundation for a lifetime of good choices.
A reward can be a treat, a smile, praise, tossing a ball, or even a tummy rub!
