Positive reinforcement is a training method that teaches your dog they want to do what you are asking instead of forcing them. If you tell your dog to sit and push its butt down when they don't, you will find yourself asking for a sit and then pushing your dog's back end down for the rest of the dog's life because that is what your dog has learned.

Using positive reinforcement like a treat teaches the dog what you expect while encouraging them to make the right choice. Once your dog learns the behavior well, you can begin phasing out the treats.

Positive reinforcement should always be your first training option as it develops your dog's self-control, relationship with your dog, and self-confidence.
